Being different isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be

A few years ago, I had a conversation with my business coach.

Me: So I’m thinking I want to do something REALLY different.
My Coach: What were you thinking?Me: I don’t know, but I want to stand out and be recognized.
My Coach: Being different isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be.
Me: Why?
My Coach: Because striking out with a new idea could be a disaster. People might not want it, they might not get you, you might not sell anything. Basically, if something is working out there, it’s better if you try to do it better- not start over.
Me: OH! I get it.

And I hear this over and over from coaches. I’m going to do x because it’s new and cool and I made it up.

Me: How’s it going?

Coach: Not so much.

So – here’s what you do…

Find what you’d love to offer and make sure that others are successful at doing it as well. Then put your special sauce all over it and improve what they were already successful at creating.

BAM! You’ll be on your way.
